The devil came round today
Wanting its way with me
Having drunk a cup of the most delicious poison
It spat out words of spite and sly superiority
Mocked and shocked
Trying to get way under my skin
Get a rise, create some anger
Edging on an attack,
Where I would then
Blame myself for losing control.
But weirdly I felt sorry for it
And saw in its eyes
The self harm song it constantly sung
To keep the loneliness at bay.
So on
It carried on
Insults and laughter
Most of the night
Then came the dawn
The birdsong and babies welcome giggles
Cold cars revving warmer
The gentle rain
And the shy sun saying hello
It finally saw the pity in my eyes
Then slunk away defeated.
