Writer’s Block

I was talking to a friend earlier today about something that afflicts all storytellers from time to time: Writer’s Block.

So I thought I would share a cure that seems to work (for me anyway)

What I do, is take a MUCH older piece of writing, preferably something that was left half formed but still kinda powerful on the page sometime ago,

Then I get to editing.

The burden of creating something totally new is lifted, even though editing ALWAYS makes it new, and it seems to spark something in my complicated brain and suddenly ideas are pouring forth once more.

Now if I could do something about this damn insomnia.

Went to bed an hour ago and yet, now, here I am drinking decaffeinated coke zero (yes I KNOW it’s bad for me) and getting ready to watch some cheesy trashy horror in the hopes I will drift off easier in a bit into that sweet darkness.

Books I am reading:

Isaac Asimov ‘The Complete Robot’

Virginia Woolf ‘ To The Lighthouse’

Charlie Jane Anders ‘Even Greater Mistakes’

TV: ‘The Bear’ ‘Silo’ ‘Irma Vep’ Movies: ‘RRR’ ‘Asteroid City’ ‘Reality’

PS this blog needs fellow writers for our page : EverythingYouInventIsTrue (Poems From Others) Link to the side

One response to “Writer’s Block”

  1. Interesting thoughts about our cruel enemy, Martin. My cure these days is to go to a pub and find a corner there. I never, or hardly ever, write at home. Pub noise compared to the distractions of home is negligible. And a pub can be really peaceful in its quiet times. I know, I live on my own, so home should be the obvious place. But it’s too personal. Even the paintings on my walls seem to howl at me when I’m trying to write. To go to a pub, pay for a coffee and spend an hour or two at work – that’s my true pleasure these days. Thanks for your thoughts…
