Our kids, from the moment they are born they start to teach us things. Thus was written for E’s birthday and is a wonderful way to ease myself back into the flow of this blog.

i watch with awe and pride,
thrilled to my core
as they fight their wars

the chaos dancer
vibrant, frantic and free-falling
a giddy pogo of liberation
inside an asthmatic cloud
slightly dangerous electrics, connections and expulsions

forever questioning
the status quo, the complacent, the insufferably rigid
demanding thought, then some sort of proof
then believable arguments laced with a hint of sincerity

adoring art and history
unafraid of learning
the shaky, jolting uncomfortable truth

pissing off the purists
enticing the naive to rethink, reevaluate
embracing rebirth
enhanced empathy

always looking out into
new days, new ways while breathing in ancient songs
barely remembered protests
an always justified and righteous anger

and if we, flawed inhabitants of this fallow earth,
wish to live as better versions of ourselves
we would do well to be inspired
and follow the incredible journey,
that Ellery continues within and onward
every day
